Product & Features

All you need is an x86 Server or x86 workstation with internal storage. Apexo comes as an ISO image that you can install directly onto your hardware. Once you went through the guided installation process, Apexo builds a Hyper-converged infrastructure on your server – ready to scale.

Apexo is simplicity at its best. All you need is a server to start with. Download the Apexo setup file and follow the on-screen guide. Voilá, your new virtual desktop infrastructure.

You need no specialty know-how on VDI or Terminal Services. A good basic understanding of IT will be sufficient.

The whole setup will take you 30 – 120 minutes depending on know-how and preparation.

Apexo is made for running on bare metal. We do not support installations on an existing virtual setup. Nested virtualization setups will drastically reduce the performance of your desktops and can only be used to have a brief look at functionalities.

Yes, Apexo can be set up on any cloud service offering bare Metal-as-a-Service. Apexo is made for running on bare metal. Service Providers such as AWS, IBM Softlayer, Oracle Cloud, Rackscale, Leaseweb… The list is endless.

So far Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure Cloud have not announced Bare Metal-as-a-Service offerings. Therefore Apexo does not support installations on these platforms.

Yes, Apexo and its predecessor “trueDaaS” were originally made for classical Sever, Storage, Network (3 Tier) setups. If you want to know more about large 3 Tier setups contact us.

No, Apexo comes as a turnkey technology for bare metal environments. Once you install Apexo on a single node it builds a Hyper-converged Desktop Infrastructure, which allows you to easily add new servers to the cluster. No need for extra HCI technology from other vendors like Nutanix.

Yes, Apexo is a cloud-ready and cloud-born technology. Originally the technology was invented for Service Providers to provide an easier, more flexible and higher margin technology platform for Desktop-as-a-Service and Cloud Workspace offerings.

Apexo and its predecessor “trueDaaS” offer very specific advantages for Service Providers from the technology and business perspective. You can learn more here.

We have an extensive partner and reselling program. Just contact us to see if you qualify for our MSP and Cloud SPLA program.

“How is Apexo different from Microsoft  RDS / Citrix Desktop / VMware Horizon…” (‘Remote Desktop Protocol’,  former ‘Terminal Server’) is one of the most frequent questions we get.

Apexo is based on vPC technology stack which is fundamentally different from Microsoft RDS, Citrix Desktop or VMware Horizon. Apexo works on the infrastructure level to build virtual pc hardware. All other architectures work on the platform level. Based on virtualization layers they build virtual Operating System access. This explains, why these classical architectures only support a limited set of operating systems.

Feature-wise the following table shows the added value that comes with the all-in-one license compared to classical technologies. Read more on differences here.

Amazon Workspaces, Nutanix Frame, Paperspace … just to name a few are all Cloud Services. Some of them provide full desktops (e.g. AWS) and some only provide online access to specific applications (e.g. Nutanix Frame). These so-called “cloud native” technologies can only be obtained as online services.

Apexo is a fully hybrid technology, that allows you to work on all technology layers. It is essentially your choice where to run Apexo. You can run it at a Cloud provider (like AWS, IBM Softlayer, Rackspace…), you can run it on-premise on your own servers, you can run it on a single node (e.g. branch office), or you can bring your own partner to run it at your trusted MSP. In Europe tocario even offers a hosted white-label cloud solution for small businesses and partners.

Your advantage is workspace mobility. You can not only choose where to run Apexo, but you can also combine different technology infrastructures and move workloads between them. Even our licensing is based on pay-as-you-go. Just like a cloud service, with the added freedom of choice.

Apexo is as simple as cloud, but you can run it anywhere.

tocario is the inventor of the vPC technology stack which is fundamentally different from any RDS based architecture or Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Solutions like Microsoft RDS, Citrix Desktop, VMware Horizon or spinoffs like Parallels RAS, Awingu, Nutanix Frame all have the same flaw. All of these architectures work on the platform level. Based on virtualization layers they build virtual Operating System access. This explains, why these classical architectures only support a limited set of operating systems.

tocario vPC works on the infrastructure level to build virtual pc hardware (vPC). This makes vPC based technology more versatile and offers true workspace functionalities. Read more on vPC here.

There are 3 ways to print from within an Apexo desktop.

  1. Users can use existing network printers (typically within the company). These printers can be connected to the apexo installation either directly from the server running apexo or remotely via a cloud connection box.
  2. Directly attached USB printers. With the possibility to pass through the USB port to the Apexo installation, you can also print on your local printer.
  3. HTML online Printer: This generates a document to be printed in the browser and will launch the print job from the browser to the known printers on the user’s PC. There is no need to manage printer drivers

Apexo supports direct USB pass through. This allows you to bring any USB device directly to the virtual desktops. This is including but not limited to:

  • Smartcard readers
  • Fingerprint readers
  • USB security dongles
  • USB storage devices – USB sticks
  • USB voice recorders
  • USB microphones

All USB classes can be restricted on the administration level to ensure granular security.

Yes, tocario Apexo provides an encrypted connection right out-of-the-box and supports multi-factor authentication which makes it a secure solution. The transmission is still encrypted and therefore highly secure. However, you won’t have hassle-full VPN setups and login procedures to work remotely.

At its core, Apexo is a full desktop virtualization technology.  However, we support application publishing based on RDS. Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a Microsoft Windows service which extends desktop and application deployments to any device. To publish classic Windows applications via RDS you need a Microsoft RDS CAL. You still get all the advantages of Desktop infrastructure management and automation.

For virtualizing a desktop no extra CALs are needed.

In some cases it could be happen that while installation a message occurs which says that no virtualzation/AES-NI is available even you have a CPU which supports virtualization and the option is enabled by BIOS.

If so this message can be ignored. It is a known bug that the processor flags are wrongly interpreted sometimes.

There is a step-by-step manual available in the logged in area on https://customer.tocario.com

At the moment we only support the BIOS boot mode. You have to change the boot mode in your server setup to “BIOS” or “LEGACY”.

Apexo pricing & licensing

Yes, Apexo is the first enterprise-grade virtual desktop technology available under a freemium model. You can simply download the installation files and install them on a server. You are free to deploy up to 9 desktops / workspaces on that server completely free. You will need a license once you deploy the 10th desktop.

Apexo comes as an all-in-one license. This means that all technology modules and features are included in just one single license. In contrast to other vendors in the market, you do not need any 3rd party side licenses to run a fully functional Virtual Desktop environment.

On top of Apexo, you will need your choice of operating systems and applications to be installed as virtual desktops.

Apexo brings everything you need to run Virtual Desktops on bare metal.

  • Hypervisor

Apexo gives you standard x86 Desktops Infrastructure. This allows you to run any kind and type of x86 operating systems and applications. For Microsoft products, this is including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, Lync, Microsoft Dynamics products, System Center, BizTalk, and Remote Desktop Services. You have the flexibility of using BYOL on-premises Microsoft volume licenses and deploying them on your private Apexo instances.

If you want to run existing Microsoft licenses on your apexo installation you are free to do so as long as the setup is dedicated to one single organization.

If you are renting an Apexo infrastructure from either tocario or another Managed Service Provider your Microsoft licenses that are eligible for license mobility and covered by active Software Assurance can also be deployed on Apexo based multi-tenant environments. Licenses that are not eligible for license mobility or that do not have active Software Assurance can be deployed on any dedicated Apexo installation.

License Mobility is a benefit available to Microsoft Volume Licensing customers with eligible server applications covered by active Microsoft Software Assurance (SA). License Mobility allows customers to move eligible Microsoft software to third party cloud providers. It is important to note that you may not need license mobility if you are using your own licenses on a dedicated installation of Apexo.

In all questions regarding specific Microsoft licensing the information above is just for rough orientation. Please also refer to your trusted license advisor or the Microsoft licensing website.
